The meetro hq has done a bit of “movin’ on up” over the past few months, but until last winter, we were all working/living in the same tiny apartment. Current.tv (some may know as al gore’s network) spent the day with us and did put together a ‘pod’ highlighting a typical day in the life of a meetro hq’r.

Seems our service provider (where meetro is hosted) is experiencing some downtime at the moment and it’s affecting Meetro and a number of other sites as well. Not sure how soon we’ll have it back up and running, but we’ll post status here as we learn more.

Today starts a new notch in travel adventures. Peter, a fellow meetro hq’r and a co-founder of the inTransit.tv reality based travel adventure is embarking on a cross country trip in 49cc scooters (just picture two dudes cruising down the street at a swift 20mph with whiny scooters under their crotch.) You may be aware of their last adventure from LA to San Diego just a few months back - Paul and Dan joined their brother Peter.

There’s an interesting twist this time around though - it’s a Choose Your Own Adventure, and you get to choose where they head to next!

For all you geeks out there, Meetro was mentioned again on slashdot linking to a nice write-up over on ExtremeTech. Luckily it’s a friday afternoon, so we’re not getting killed with the webrequests coming over.

Ohh, and we’ve recently been annouced as a webware (c|net) Top 100 finalist for web2.0 companies. Why not vote for us (polls close monday.)

Paul Bragiel, CEO and founder of Meetro, said his tracking technology can find people anywhere in the world using an internet connection.

The difference is, all Meetro users can track each other, whether they are friends or strangers. “You feel an aura. You don’t know the exact location and how many stories up or anything,” said Bragiel. “We keep it as safe as possible for people. And users can opt out of the service, too.”

Meetro also alerts users to nearby businesses.

“We know your profile and where you are at and say here are things that are relevant to you we serve things to you. But, we won’t ruin the user experience.”

It’s that time of year - the bestest day in all of San Francisco, where 100’s of thousands of us gather up to make a run from the San Francisco Bay to the Pacific Ocean Breakers.

The rickshaw has been in retirement for the past few months as we had some issues putting all the pieces back together, but we got our needed supplies at the local hardware store, got the rickshaw hosted up in the air, and bolted the carriage back to the wheel base. I’m proud to say that this baby is ready to roll out the shop and hit the San Francisco streets, all 7.46 miles of it!!!

Yes, you heard that right, we’ve released a Universal Binary for all you Intel Mac folks. We wanted to make sure we had kicked the tires on it a bit before making it public.

A few of you may have been prompted to get the new download a few weeks ago, and if you haven’t, well then:

We’ve kicked the tires on this baby and we’re ready to roll it out of the shop. With the 1.0 release of Meetro, we have lots of new features for you to play with:

• Notifications - Now when somebody sends you new comments or MeetroNotes, you’ll get a friendly little bubble to notify you.
• Multi-IM - Now you can quickly switch to your multi-im buddies by clicking on the network icon at the bottom and selecting ‘See These Buddies’
• Quick view of a person’s links - by right clicking on their avatar and clicking the ‘Links’ menu item
• Send a profile link to your friends - Say you have a chat window open with QueenJean, and you’re checking out Peter’s profile and see something funny. Simply right click on Peter’s avatar and select ‘Send Profile Link To -> QueenJean”.
• Leave a comment simply by right clicking on their picture on your near/friend list.
• New menu items and sidebar icons for quick access to all the links available in the dashboard
• And obviously, a Stable 1.0 core which now runs on machines that were having problems starting meetro

This all ties in with some ’soft-releases’ we’ve done in the past few weeks, including:

• Much Richer Profiles - upload an entire photo gallery, or bling out your profile with all the new fields and feeds we pull in.
• A brand spanking new homepage which now features a new video of everything under Meetro’s hood.

Last week Dan launched our latest product, Meetro Brew. We’ve spent the past week vigorously running it through multiple use cases. We tested through all hours of the night - and we’re excited to say that it’s passed all the tests (only 1 person went blind), and we’re ready to start production on another brew.

Pictured above is Dan getting ready to pour our first glass of Meetro Brew which he himself brewed with some brewing knowledge passed down from Sam. You can see the soda keg he filled just besides our kegerator. This was our 2nd launch of Meetro Brew, as Dan’s first attempts resulted in a little too much bacteria for human consumption

We’re almost through this feature release, a Pale Ale, and Dan is already in the works of releasing our next feature, a Porter.

We’ve been hard at work building out new features, reworking the website, and gearing up for a soon to be released Meetro 1.0. Today, we’ve added a number of new features along with a brand new homepage.

For most of you, the features will take affect when you restart the client (no download needed You can force an update by clicking ‘Help’ -> ‘Reload Dashboard’ and you’ll see the changes take affect. • We’re Bringing Sexy Back…
  to your profile - We’ve now added photo galleries to your profiles. Just goto ‘Edit Your Profile’ and click on Photo Gallery to upload your photos.
• Get connected quickly - If you share similar interest and tastes, we’ll highlight those similarities when viewing profiles.
• Instant Notifications - Now when somebody nearby is trying to get in touch with you, any notes, comments, or friend requests will get forwarded to your inbox.
• StatusBadge from the client - Click on the new ‘Widgets’ link in the Dashboard to create a status badge for you website or email.

When you’re looking at a profile, if you share the same tastes in movies, music, and other ‘favorites’, we’ll highlight the similarities between your two profiles. Think of it a quick way of informing you how similar you are to the other person you’re looking at. Just one of our many new features that will help you meet ‘new people’ in the *real* world.

So I felt the table shake, it was a familiar feeling, sorta like a subway passing underneath you. Except it get stronger and my lamp started shaking. I had to ask outloud if that was an earthquake, to which Dan responded, ‘I think so.’ I then responded with an ‘awesome!’

• Better support for multi-im conversations (via AIM, MSN, Gtalk, etc.)
• When somebody is away, just hover over their name to see their away message… you know somebody is away when there is a clock on the bottom right corner of their pic…

Day -1
January 23rd, 2006

Tomorrow I will be embarking on a journey like none other I have experienced before. I will be joining a small start-up out in Palo Alto. It’s gonna be quite a different experience for me. For one, I’ll be sharing a 3 bedroom house with 5-6 other people. If that wasn’t tight enough, we’ll also be working out of this apartment.

I’ll also be cutting back on all the things I’m used to (nights out). On the plus side, I won’t have to put on my shoes to go to the bathroom (as it has been the past 2 weeks.)

I’m very excited for this opportunity. It’s right in the social networking space that I’ve been looking for. It’s also at a small company with lots of potential and a passionate team. It’s a gamble, but it’s a risk with sex appeal - I like the product, I like the team, I think the atmosphere will be interesting (to say the least), and I think the sky is the limit.

What’s exciting for me is that this is a site that has the potential for millions, if not tens of millions of users. I’m excited to help make that happen. I’ve been reading lots of books lately, and “The Tipping Point” has me turned on to the idea of learning how to get mass-market adoption, learning what sparks to light in order to create a critical mass.

I’m excited to be out in silicon valley. This is shit I only ‘heard’ about when I was in high school. It sounded sexy to me back then, all those dot-coms. Well this is web2.0, and there’s another boom going on out here. It’s moving MUCH FASTER. The VC’s are smarter though and I think we’ll see a lot more legitimate schemes come out this time around. I’m looking forward to being in the middle of it, meeting all the other twenty-somethings that are making the same plunge. Tech excites me. Seeing the founder of a website I love, is like celebrity spotting for me.

It’s taken a long time for me to get out here. I can remember talking about coming out here on my birthday. Back in November, I met a person who said to me “Sometimes you just have to jump and the net will appear.” That couldn’t be more true. I think it took me a long time to jump, around 3-6 months. Maybe next time it won’t be so hard.

I remember bungee jumping 5-6 years ago. I was standing on top of a crane on the edge of the vegas strip. It was night out and the strip was lit up. I was standing over a pool (like that would help if the cord broke.) The wind was blowing, I looked down, I got a pit in my stomach. I couldn’t make a noise. I knew in my head that I couldn’t do it. But I just closed my eyes and somehow was able to control my knees. I bent down and took a step forward, and just continued to fall. I really couldn’t make a noise at this point. I wanted to scream, but I couldn’t. I was stiff. At least I made the jump I thought. Then for the next 20 secs, only images of me hitting the pavement flew through my head. I couldn’t take in much of the outside world. I stretched the cord out, and bounce back up. My back hurt like hell, was it supposed to hurt this much? I regained some conscience thought. I proceeded to bob up and down like a paddle ball.

In the end, I was lowered to the ground where I had trouble standing up straight. I was dizzy. I was full of adrenaline. I knew I didn’t want to do that again.

Let’s see how this works out.

• Taken just before the move to Seattle, Washington (from Alburquerque.)
• Paul Allen wins the best award for Extreme Makeover. (He’s the scary one in the bottom right, one would have to assume that his fingernails, off camera, are 3+ inches long.)
  
• Miriam Lubow, not pictured (stranded home in a snowstorm), opted out of the move to Seattle cause her husband said “What are we going to follow this kid [Gates] Seattle? It always rains in Seattle.” Three years later, she made the move.

We like to add a little twist to tradition here at meetro. We wanted to send off holiday cards to all of our friends, but needed to put our own techy flavor on it.

So we all got together and put together a special holiday card for you, our friends. We played off an old Microsoft photo, that featured the core team circa early 80’s (the first time high top’s were in fashion.)

We sent out a few hundred of these cards to our friends. So if we missed anybody, our apologies, it’s hard to get people’s physical addresses in this digital age.

Meetro has moved once again. One year ago Meetro packed up it’s bags, and followed the Oregon Trail west to find ourselves smack in the middle of Silicon Valley in downtown Palo Alto. Unfortunately we lost two developers to Dysentery…

In October we packed our bags, loaded them into the rickshaw and made our trek north, this time to the city that trembles, known as ‘San Francisco’

Some clean-up was required at the old HQ, we’ll miss it dearly.

After a quick jaunt to the Bay this weekend to visit two of my newly minted San Franciscan friends, I realized how much more alive the Internet is up there, as opposed to down here. We’re practically in a time warp down here, for all the interest and attention we give to the industry.

Granted, it was a very techie-infused weekend (i.e., most participants in the weekend were Bay-area techies), with talk of Meetro, Yelp, Valleywag, Dodgeball, Flickr, Pingomatic, Feedburner, YouTube, Paypal, and AdBrite, among many, many others. Yeah, this ain’t your run-of-the-mill Google/eBay/MySpace crowd, by any means! However, most Angelenos have been lost since the word “techie-infused” in that first sentence, I’m sure.

Maybe I’m just not involved in the scene down here, but you know, up there, it’s much more than a mere scene - you see it, you hear it, you touch it, you smell it. Dude, the Internet rocks these days! The dot-com boom is better than ever! It seems that everyone in ‘Frisco is involved in the latest and greatest software client up there, as we all should be! But when you mention to a friend down here on IM that you’re Yelping to pass the time at work, you can be sure that the next message will be a puzzled, “What’s ‘YELPING’”?

Sigh.

Trying to understand how the new generations who are growing up with the Internet all around them is sometimes a challenge. Seeing Meetro in action was like that.

At first, I didn’t get Meetro. I do get instant messaging, having worked on Yahoo! Messenger and probably having one of the largest buddy lists around (a great help in debugging the Yahoo! Messenger login feature of Meetro haha). Using instant messaging is great for a variety of reasons: work, keeping in touch, just saying hi, etc. But these were with a defined list of friends. With Meetro, it’s not like that. You don’t have just friends visible and available to talk to; you have the entire universe of logged in users and sorted by those close to you.

Being an old world guy, I am used to people being physically close…or not close. You see them. You smell them. You can touch them…maybe if they let you. With Meetro, they were close…virtually. How weird is that?

And they were total strangers.

Many thoughts entered my mind as I stared at the initial screen of Meetro where you see a huge matrix of pictures of people who are logged in now. A little more clicking and you find out they are actually close to you, maybe at the table next to you…!

Do I just talk to them over IM? How do I approach them over IM? What do I say? Is this socially acceptable? What will they think of me? Will people think I’m weird throwing an electronic hello to them? Will they reject me?…I hate rejection!

This goes on for a couple of days and then I get my first random IM from someone in the Philippines.

Whoa. But I wasn’t there to return the IM and couldn’t reply (c’mon guys get the offline messenging feature up!).

Then a day later, someone from Russia pings me. Some more in the U.S. And I’m around for many of these now and we have some decent short conversations with people I didn’t know. Amazing!

It was like a light bulb lighting up in my brain. All of a sudden, I viscerally experienced how and why someone would meet and contact a total stranger over Meetro. I suddenly UNDERSTOOD.

Social norms changing. Internet enables. Walls coming down. New interaction styles emerging. Total strangers wanting and now able to connect easily.

This is the stuff that our children, the people who are growing up with the Internet around all the time, are going to accept as normal while we, the old farts of half old way-half Internet, have to adjust and adapt to.

As an old world guy, I NOW BELIEVE. If you are old world too, will you believe? Or maybe the real question is: Can you?

Thankfully for us, meetro.com has given us the ability to “get out from behind the computer,” as Paul stated in a TV interview.

Thankfully for us, we have all been able to make a friend or two. Be the one who still is able to speak in 20 years. Talk to your neighbors. Say hi to someone on the street.

A cool business meeting at the Santa Cruz beach was just one of the activities that I will remember from my summer internship at “Meetro”….

The stereotypical summer internship involves students performing tedious, boring tasks for a huge company, almost the opposite of my experience. In a company of this small size, I got to work on stimulating projects along with the other coworkers.

The other programmers cooked amazing foods for our daily dinners. Cheerful banter consumed us as we devoured heaps of food. The dinners I had varied every day; one day we ate home-made “open source” pizza, and other days we barbecued hot dogs or chicken.

Anyway, this video is close to my heart, making its blog debut right here, for all -2 people reading this right now. For those of you that don’t click blindly nor follow the leader when you’re told, ’tis mi madre y mi gato, y la locura.

In non-boob news, I’ve been obsessed with Flickr as of late. “What kind of self-professed well-endowed techie is she?” you exclaim in disgust. Trust me, I’m not late in jumping onto the Flickr bandwagon, it’s just that the fires have been re-ignited, so that I’m really making better use of the slant toward community in this snazzy little service.

For instance, user Danny.l proudly captures an obviously life-altering conversation with our very own Paul…but since Danny.l won’t let me grab his photo, you’ll have to link out to it yourself. Sheesh. Keep it communal like STDs, people!

Then there are the random shots of gratuitous chest hair, “Dress Like the Next Person You Meet Day,” fear-inducing lawnmower-collides-with-head ‘dos, and course, “Play Footsies with Your Ambiguously Straight Friends” Sunday. It’ll beat out Super Bowl Sunday any day.

Wait - those photos are of boobs, too, just a different kind! So back to my original premise about boobs…

I have the sneaking suspicion that I am the only one who reads this.

We know winter is coming when theres 4 different jackets or sweaters in your backseat.

Masey was running during recess and stomped on a dodgeball that was rolling toward him, he flew forward, scraped up both his knees, squashed his left hand and has a huge contusion on his neck from the plastic barrier that keeps the woodchips in the playlot. He’s ok just a little smacked up. Thank you for keeping his recovery in your thoughts. We have an ortho appointment on Monday - maybe thru the miracle of prayer - the new films wont even show evidence of the distorted fracture of his fourth metacarpal!

Are the ubiquitious chileans more likely to “A/S/L” to a tits-to-the-world chica, or one whose smiling face is prominetly displayed. Whats more important, tits or face..or….. profile (yikes i think that means they’re really ugly)?

I’m more of a face person, but I think thats the nature of being a girl. I really don’t want to see the gratuitous “look at my weiner-schnitzel” shots. Humm,.. perhaps I could be a profile person? Maybe both, a face-file type, I like checking out what people think is funny, cool or quirky and then comparing it to their picture.

But I also don’t masterbate at my laptop, so perhaps I am not the target audience for the titties.

I apologize, but I have a good reason. I have been too busy to photograph myself in schwag. That is because I’ve been spending the majority of the past few days naked and fornicating.
